Network Break 52: From AI To Ashley Madison Bots

Category: Technology
Duration: 00:00:00

Description:

Take a Network Break! In episode 52 we review news from VMworld, including VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger’s prediction of AI for IT, and ponder why so many storage startups are flocking to a virtualization show.

We discuss the recently announced Cisco/Apple partnership, and Greg suggests that Cisco hopes some of Apple’s magic dust will fall on the networking giant. We also examine Amazon’s latest acquisition of video encoding/transcoding software maker.

Last but not least, our jaws drop over a story that delves into unsavory behavior at Ashley Madison, including the use of bots to send fake messages to male clients to give the impression that more women were active on the site. All the links to these stories are below.

Storage Reigns

Storage Dominates VMworld Once Again – Forbes

VMworld was full of storage startups vying for attention from the assembled enterprise technology crowd. One analyst I spoke with said that he had counted 80 storage companies that he was tracking. With so many companies competing for market share, the traditional incumbents EMC and NetApp have some fierce competition ahead of them.

Apple & Cisco Plot An Enterprise Fast Lane – Light Reading

The partnership will see Cisco optimizing its network for iPhones and iPads and their associated apps to work more efficiently, seamlessly and reliably together. Cisco’s mobile, cloud and premises-based collaboration tools — Spark, Telepresence and WebEx — will be optimized for iOS, so that employees could, for example, fire up a video conference call directly from an iOS calendar.

Turing Tests For Lonely Men

Ashley Madison Code Shows More Women, More Bots – Gizmodo

After searching through the Ashley Madison database and private email last week, I reported that there might be roughly 12,000 real women active on Ashley Madison. Now, after looking at the company s source code, it s clear that I arrived at that low number based in part on a misunderstanding of the evidence. Equally clear is new evidence that Ashley Madison created more than 70,000 female bots to send male users millions of fake messages, hoping to create the illusion of a vast playland of available women.
