Network Break 55: Microsoft’s Switch, Security Gets Hotter

Description:

Take a Network Break! Join Drew Conry-Murray, Greg Ferro, and Ethan Banks as we discuss the latest IT news and trends. This week we’re joined by special guest Steven Hill, Senior Analyst, Data Center Solutions at Current Analysis.

We start with Microsoft’s announcement of Azure Cloud Switch (ACS), a home-grown switch Microsoft will use to run its Azure network. The announcement is good news for the white box market, and perhaps less good for legacy vendors.

Sticking with switches, we transition to news that Arista and Dell have rolled out 25Gbps switches based on a new Ethernet standard. Greg and Steve debate the impact that 25Gbps options will have in the market.

We then comment on the news that former Cisco executive Rob Lloyd has taken the CEO position at Hyperloop, a startup that’s targeting the transportation industry. Will his experience moving packets translate to the business of moving real things?

Next up is security news from Cisco, which suffered from a couple of recent vulnerability announcements. See the show notes for extensive resources.

Speaking of security, we review a couple of industry reports on the continuing growth of the security industry, though we’re doubtful it will have much of a positive impact.

If you haven’t been paying attention to IPv4, now might be a good time to start as ARIN’s free pool of v4 addresses officially reaches zero. And last but not least, we discuss the Amazon outage that took several high-profile customers off line for hours. The top line? We’re getting a lot better at dealing with cloud outages.

You can find all the show notes below.
