Guarding The Sense Doors is a contemplation focusing attention on the transition between the stimulation of seeing, hearing, and so on and the meaning-making function of the mind. The goal is to be able to discern the difference between the manifestation of unwholesome self-states and wholesome self-states, supporting the renunciation of the first and the fulfillment of the second. During this meditation different focal points for attention are suggested, beginning with noting the transition between the basic stimulation of the breathing process and the cognitive processes of the mind that identify “in-breath, out-breath”. Other suggested focal points include noticing how the body relates to unpleasant body sensations with the mental formation of the hindrance of aversion/ill-will. The conscious noting of the transitory nature of sensations and of the mental formations associated with the sensations is recommended as an additional contemplation. This practice supports development of one of the classic insights signifying progress in the process of Awakening, nama/rupa, with nama representing the mind’s cognitive function and rupa the basic sensations that are experienced. Insight into nama/rupa furthers the deconstructing of the belief that there is an enduring and autonomous self. |
