The Lower Eastside Girls Club Love Letters
This week, we are highlighting one of our educational programs! Heritage Radio Scholars in-person programming offers high school students the opportunity to learn audio reporting techniques while discovering how food shapes the world around them.

In Fall 2024, HRN collaborated with The Lower East Side Girls Club to create the Love Letters to the LES Girls Podcast.

Our Digital Media Educator Sasha DuBose (they/she) shares their experiences teaching the food storytelling course of their dreams, alongside anecdotes from the girls they taught.

Our storytelling community is made possible by listeners like you!

Behind The Fellowship

Check out what our Radio & Research Fellows are Doing!

Meet Taylor Graham!

“As an undergraduate student at Columbia University, where I study Film and Media Studies and Political Science, I joined the fellowship to gain more experience in audio journalism.

What I love most about being a reporter on Meat and Three is bringing ideas to fruition. The episode I led produced, “New Year, New (Me)al Prep,” started as my 2-minute pitch, having meal-prepped all last summer, and it was the most rewarding to see it be brought to life.

When I’m not sharing food stories on the podcast, I am either in a library doing assigned readings or thrifting in New York City—there’s often no in-between!”

What We’re Making

Joyeux Mardi Gras !

Just because you are not in New Orlean, doesn’t mean you can’t get a taste of the Big Easy!

Adapted from the city’s culinary legend  – Leah Chase’s

The Dooky Chase Cookbook.”

This recipe is served with a beautiful article written by culinary historian, Dr. Jessica B. Harris.

While you’re cheffing, check out this episode of A Hungry Society hosted by Zella Palmer of Culture + Flavor about the late Leah Chase legacy .
