Youth In October

Our October editorial theme is YOUTH!

For children, this season is full of excitement—whether it’s sharing Halloween candy or enjoying the seasonal treats that fall brings. But beyond the fun, it’s also the perfect time to help them understand the deeper connections between their food and the world around them. As the fall harvest arrives, it’s not just about enjoying abundance, but also reflecting on the systems that make this abundance possible.

Youth signifies potential, creativity, and energy. While we encourage children to delight in their food, we also have an opportunity to teach them about the importance of creating food systems that are inclusive and sustainable. And with a mission to shift the way people think about food, this conversation is pivotal.

Through our programs that educate young people to share the food-related messages the world needs to hear, we hope to inspire a generation that approaches food with curiosity, respect, and a desire to foster positive change.

The future of our food systems rests in the hands of today’s youth, and the lessons we impart now will shape how they navigate and transform those systems. By empowering young minds to not only enjoy the food they love but to understand its origins and its impact on the world, we plant the seeds for a more equitable and sustainable future. As we celebrate the vibrancy and potential of youth this October, we’re reminded that every conversation, every shared meal, and every new discovery can spark the change our food systems so desperately need. Together, we can ensure that the next generation not only inherits a world of abundance but one where justice, sustainability, and inclusion are the foundations of every bite.

HRN Podcasts

“This drawing celebrates the youthful joy of October, when the air turns crisp and the leaves start to fall. It’s all about those sweet moments of childhood during Halloween—sharing treats, laughing together, and carving up pumpkins. I wanted to capture that special blend of friendship and festivity that only comes around once a year, with kids from all walks of life coming together to make memories surrounded by food, friends and family. It’s a snapshot of those carefree days, full of laughter and the simple thrill of being young during one of the most magical times of the year.”

Background on this project:

As HRN deepens our commitment to food justice and expands our understanding of what that really means in practice, we are putting out the call for artists to adorn the HRN logo throughout 2024. Each month, we will feature the work of BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ visual artists and graphic designers to explore and interpret our monthly editorial theme. Their work will be featured on HRN channels from our newsletter, website, social media, and beyond.

To apply, please send a brief, one-page cover letter and portfolio or work sample to info@heritageradionetwork.org with the subject line “Editorial Theme Graphic Design” + your name. If selected, you will receive $250 for each final illustration. HRN is accepting applications on a rolling basis.
