My guest this week is the one and only Zack Carlson. Zack is a writer, actor, and producer whose credits include The American Scream and Zero Charisma. Formerly a film programmer at the Alamo Drafthouse, where for years he also hosted Terror Tuesday (originally Terror Thursday), he also works with Fantastic Fest and the Austin Film Society. Zack co-authored (with Bryan Connolly) the book Destroy All Movies! which is a massive tome that documents the appearance of every punk on film in the 20th century. It's dedicated to two people, and one of them is Penelope Spheeris, the director of his favorite movie, Suburbia (1983). Zack was kind enough to join me to talk about that film, making movies, his relationship with punk culture, his time in the music industry, how he developed his passion for movies, skinheads, his time at the Alamo, writing books, goats, Bleeding Skull video, and more. |
