Description:

On this special edition of Morning Joe, Mika, Joe, and Willie are on-location in Oxford, Mississippi -- a stone's throw away from the Ole Miss campus -- to talk with Mississippi voters about President Trump, the special Senate election, the growing animosity toward the press, and the rising popularity of Democrats in the south.

But first, the big stories, this Friday morning:

Yesterday evening, and into the early hours of this morning, Hurricane Florence began its descent upon the eastern seaboard of the United States. specifically targeting the coastlines of North and South Carolina.

Florence, as of Thursday evening, has been downgraded to a category 1 storm with reported sustained winds of 90 miles per hour and causing power outages for more than 300,000 people.

Widespread and severe flooding is expected across the Carolina coast and further inland; storm surges are believed to reach a pinnacle of 11 feet.

This morning, MSNBC and NBC News have a plethora of reporters on the ground in both North and South Carolina to bring you the latest on storm-related damage, flooding, and rescue efforts. Stay with both networks, all day, today, for continuing coverage of Hurricane Florence and its projected path, northward.

The President, meanwhile, fostered backlash against himself, yesterday, with a tweet denying the findings of an independent study, conducted by George Washington University, into the number of casualties directly caused by Hurricane Maria and its aftermath.

The GWU study concluded that close to 3,000 people were killed from the hurricane that devastated Puerto Rico last year -- that number includes casualties that occurred in the months after the hurricane had hit, due to, according to The Washington Post, "power outages lasting for months, disease outbreaks, water insecurity and inadequate health care."

The President, tweeting, "3000 people did not die in the two hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico...[the number inflation] was done by the Democrats in order to make me look as bad as possible when I was successfully raising Billions of Dollars to help rebuild Puerto Rico."

Politicians on both sides of the aisle have condemned President Trump for this particular comment, including the Governor of Puerto Rico, Ricardo Rosselló, who bit back against the President, saying, "Neither the people of Puerto Rico nor the victims deserve their pain to be questioned."

Also making headlines, this morning, new reporting from ABC News is suggesting that former Trump Campaign Manager Paul Manafort has reached a plea deal with Special Counsel Robert Mueller. There is no word, at the moment, on whether or not the deal will include cooperation with Mueller and, in turn, against President Trump.

Trump Lawyer Rudy Giuliani, in a recent interview with Politico, says he is not worried about Manafort flipping, saying that he "long ago evaluated him as an honorable man."

It's Friday, September 14, 2018. Welcome to a special edition of Morning Joe.
