On Saturday morning, President Donald Trump tweeted a bombshell admission: his son, Donald Trump Jr., conducted the infamous 2016 meeting at Trump Tower with high-ranking Russian officials in an effort to "get information on an opponent." While the tweet did not mention Hillary Clinton, by name, the President went on to say that the meeting was "totally legal," and "done all the time in politics." The tweet is the latest iteration of the motivations behind the Trump Tower meeting revealed by President Trump and his team of lawyers -- ranging from Russian-American adoption legislation to denying the meeting's existence altogether. Trump Lawyer Jay Sekulow admitted, yesterday, that he was given "false information" about who dictated Donald Trump Jr.'s official response to the meeting -- saying, back in 2017, that President Trump had no involvement in his son's statement. It was revealed that, in actuality, the President directly instructed his son, and staff members, to lie about the purpose of the meeting to the press. Reporting from The New Yorker later concluded that DNC documents that were stolen were "later used in an overt effort to sway the election." Additionally, according to The Washington Post, the President is becoming increasingly distressed about Robert Mueller's Special Counsel inching its indictments closer and closer to Trump's inner circle. This includes Donald Trump Jr., whose innocence is maintained by his father, saying he "does not believe his son purposefully broke the law." It's Monday, August 6, 2018. Welcome to Morning Joe. |
