With just over a week until President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin hold a summit in Helsinki, Finland, a number of Republicans spent their Fourth of July in Moscow, Russia, attempting to patch up the outwardly standoffish relationship between the United States and Russia before said summit. The meeting with Republican representatives has turned heads as a bipartisan Senate intel panel came out in agreement with the U.S. intelligence community's findings that Russia had interfered with the 2016 Presidential Election in favor of Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton. With that said, both President Trump and President Putin are slated to meet with each other on the 16th of July, alone, and without cameras or members of the media present. President Trump has also, reportedly, narrowed down his list of potential replacements for retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. Heading the shortlist are Brett Kavanaugh, who served in George W. Bush's White House, and Amy Coney Barrett, who served as a law clerk for Justice Antonin Scalia. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) has already signaled to colleagues his apprehension to vote for Kavanaugh, if nominated; and, Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) has widely been considered a crucial swing vote by Senate Democrats based on the rhetoric by the GOP to overturn Roe v. Wade. It's Thursday, July 5th, 2018. Welcome to Morning Joe. |
