Early yesterday afternoon, Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, who has served his seat on the Court for over thirty years after being appointed by Former President Ronald Reagan, announced his retirement, which will take effect in July. Almost immediately after Justice Kennedy's retirement letter to the President was released, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) took to the floor of the Senate to make an announcement of his own: the Senate will vote on President Trump's nominee for Kennedy's replacement by autumn. Sen. McConnell's statement triggered a wave of criticism and cries of hypocrisy from Senate Democrats, citing Sen. McConnell's rule-changing fight to block Former President Barack Obama's nomination, Merrick Garland, before the 2016 Presidential Election. Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) appeared on 'Hardball with Chris Matthews' last night and spoke frankly on the intentions of her fellow Democratic colleagues toward the current SCOTUS nomination rules: "Based on every conversation I've had with my colleagues so far this afternoon, everybody is prepared to play hardball." With us, this morning to discuss what is slated to be a lengthy battle of two parties, we have Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut. It is Thursday, June 28, 2018. Welcome to Hardb-- Morning Joe. |
