The Text Files: Newly-Released Text Messages Suggest Kavanaugh Knew of Accuser's Claims Before 'New Yorker' Story, Contradicting Senate Testimony

Description:

NBC News has uncovered new text messages sent by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and members of his team that may point to Kavanaugh's knowledge of the sexual assault incident involving former Yale classmate Deborah Ramirez before her bombshell 'New Yorker' article was published.

In one text message, Kavanaugh is recorded asking friend Karen Yarasavage if she would be willing to come to his defense if any accusations came to fruition.

The contents of the texts directly contradict the Judge's testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, just last week, where he claimed that the first time he had heard of Ms. Ramirez's sexual assault accusation was in the 'New Yorker' with that specific article.

At this moment, according to reporting from NBC News' Heidi Przybyla, it is unclear as to whether or not the FBI will look into the text messages as evidence against Kavanaugh.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump announced, yesterday, that the FBI should be able to expand its probe into Brett Kavanaugh's past, saying, in part, "I think the FBI should do what they have to do to get to the answer."

But, the concession comes with one caveat: the investigation must conclude by the end of this week.

The White House, over the weekend, came under considerable fire for limiting the amount of witnesses eligible for questioning by the FBI to just four people, including Kavanaugh's friend Mark Judge who was allegedly present during the sexual assault incidents.

This all comes as new polling from Quinnipiac University is showing 48% of people siding against the confirmation of Judge Kavanaugh, up six points since just last month, while just 42% believing that he should be admitted to the Supreme Court.

And, the President has announced a new iteration of the North American Free Trade Agreement, affectionately called "The United States Mexico Canada Agreement," or USMCA, for short. President Trump praised the new deal. while in the White House Rose Garden, yesterday, as the long-awaited coming-together of the U.S. and "two wonderful partners."

We'll break down 'NAFTA 2.0," a recent flare-up of tension with China, and President Trump's latest attacks on Democrats at a campaign rally in Tennessee.

It's Tuesday, October 2, 2018. Welcome to Morning Joe.
