Our Parole System is Broken. How Do We Fix It?

Category: Society & Culture
Duration:
Publish Date: 2018-04-12 10:43:46
Description:

Every year, tens of thousands of prisoners become eligible for parole. But many officials reviewing parole applications are overworked, under-trained and rarely grant parole. Journalists Katie Rose Quandt and Victoria Law discuss what this means for mass incarceration and public safety. Quandt’s story in The Outline, "The False Hope of Parole" examines the dysfunction of Missouri's parole board. Law's story for Injustice Today, "Can Police Opposition Overturn Parole Reform?" looks at the case of New York prisoner Herman Bell, who was recently granted parole after serving 45 years for killing two police officers.

This segment is guest hosted by Cindy Rodriguez.
