The Mysterious Death of a Swiss Activist in Borneo

Category: Society & Culture
Duration:
Publish Date: 2018-03-04 23:00:00
Description:

In 1984, Swiss-born Bruno Manser joined an expedition to the Mulu caves on Borneo where he lived among the Dayak people, the fabled “Headhunters of Borneo,” until he disappeared in 2000. Journalist Carl Hoffman follows his story in his new book The Last Wild Men of Borneo: A True Story of Death and Treasure. Hoffman looks at how Manser's path intersected with an American named Michael Palmieri who settled in Bali in the 1970's and staged expeditions into the Bornean jungle to acquire art and artifacts from the Dayaks. Hoffman unravels the mystery of Bruno’s disappearance and seeks answers to the questions surrounding both men.

Hoffman will give a lecture on March 5th at 7 pm at The Explorer’s Club (Club Headquarters at 46 E 70th Street)

Hoffman will be in conversation with Joshua Hammer on March 19th at 7 pm at The Half King Reading Series (505 W 23rd Street).

This segment is guest hosted by DW Gibson.
