Syllabus Description: In this lecture, we will step back from topics within a game to Magic as a commercial product. Magic has largely been successful because it layers the lore of fantastic worlds on top of these mathematical systems to make it tangible to players. We will look at the target consumers for Magic and how Wizards of the Coast has marketed their products to create such a successful game. We will discuss some of the theory about the design of individual cards, the guiding principles Magic designers use, and how the game has changed over the years. We can frame most of this within the current release of Zendikar and the choices that Wizards made in designing this set.
We also respond to some comments from listeners on our previous podcasts and discuss how our in-class draft went
