The Atlanta Falcons were patient in their search for Dean Pees' replacement at defensive coordinator, and it paid off with the hiring of New Orleans Saints co-defensive coordinator/defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen. Nielsen lacks experience as a defensive coordinator but is an up-and-coming coach with a bright future ahead of him. The experience he does possess is coaching up defensive linemen and pass rushers, as his arrival in New Orleans coincided with a massive jump in sack production that has led to them being one of the premier pass-rushing teams for the past six seasons.
Aaron Freeman outlines other coaching changes with three assistants exiting and what it may mean for the team's personnel this offseason as Nielsen could lure several impending Saints free agents along the defensive line here to Atlanta. He also discusses the schematic changes and how Vonn Bell might be their prime free-agent target at safety instead of Jessie Bates. He discusses the likely increase in man coverage, split safety looks, and how this may prompt the Falcons to target another corner at the top of the 2023 NFL Draft.
