Description: 19-03-13 Institute of English Studies Roman Jakobson: Poetry of Self, City, Sign and Form M. A. Coghill (London Metropolitan): 'Self and City Poetry: Jakobson, Deictics and Shifters' Dr Coghill's research into the linguistic and semiotic theories of Roman Jakobson (1896-1982) gives rise, through Jakobson’s own examples, to analysis of poetry based on the Russian Formalist definitions of ‘poetic function’ and ‘literariness’. Within this field of analysis, deictics and shifters are highlighted. This paper argues that this has a special relevance for poetry of the city. Poems discussed will include some poems by Aljagrov, Jakobson’s pseudonym. Dr M A Coghill has recently completed a PhD at The London Metropolitan University on City Poetry and Jakobson’s Formalist theory of ‘poetic function’. Shades of Light: A Triumph of City 2013, published by www.cityofpoetry.co.uk is now available. This poetic sequence is an exploration of how the person balances a human existence with the demands of the city.
