Former Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder explains. *** Traveling brings with it its own set of risks. One of them is to make sure you get there safely. When you’re traveling in your vehicle, it’s imperative that you check your gas gauge to make sure you have adequate fuel to get to your destination. Judge your distances and whether you can get there safely. The other issue is, do not rely on the fact that your cell phone will always work. There are many locations in the state of Utah—the west in particular—where cell phone coverage simply does not exist. It can give one a false sense of security. It’s also imperative that as you travel you carry: * Road-side flares * Blanket * Water * Additional food * Emergency plan should the vehicle break down It seems obvious, but often times in a remote area this can provide significant safety hazards. Ensure that you have a plan when things go well, and more importantly, when things don’t go so well.
