The Future of California’s Net Neutrality Bill

Category: News & Politics
Duration: 00:23:58
Publish Date: 2018-07-06 11:00:00
Description:

A strong net neutrality bill is finally moving forward. It passed after a compromise between State Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), the author of the bill, and Assemblyman Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles), whose committee had previously “gutted” it. SB 822 would prevent internet service providers from prioritizing certain internet traffic and blocking or slowing other services. It’s been called the “gold standard” of state net neutrality laws, but some California senators have argued it goes too far. And providers such as AT&T and Comcast claim that implementing state regulations will be too complicated. We’ll discuss what’s included in SB 822, where the bill goes from here and what it would mean for California if it passes.

Guest:
Scott Wiener,
state senator, California; author of SB 822 bill
Graham Owens, legal fellow, Tech Freedom
Levi Sumagaysay, tech reporter and editor, The Mercury News
