Hurricane Maria killed at least 4,645 people in Puerto Rico, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine this week. The new estimate, which far exceeds the government’s official death count of 64, comes as the island continues to struggle with power outages, supply shortages and a crippled economy.
