Grammy-Winner Arturo O’Farrill on Art, Activism and the Future of Latin Jazz

Category: News & Politics
Duration: 00:28:27
Publish Date: 2018-05-10 12:30:00
Description:

Despite selling thousands of records, Latin jazz artist Arturo O’Farrill says music like his is overlooked by the establishment. That prompted him to found the Harlem-based Afro Latin Jazz Alliance, which aims to preserve the genre and teach it to a new generation. For his current tour, O’Farrill and his 18-piece band are teaming up with progressive activists like Cornel West. The idea, he says, is to “instill the power of activism and jazz in resistance to the oppressive national political culture currently taking shape in America.” O’Farill joins us in the studio.

Guests:
Arturo O’Farrill, GRAMMY award-winning composer; founder and artistic director, “The Afro-Latin Jazz Alliance;” leader of the 18-piece Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra
