Despite some major wins like The Santa Rosa Press Democrat’s Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the 2017 wildfires, local journalism in California continues to take a hit with the layoffs of 15 journalists from the Sacramento Bee. And it’s not only diminishing subscribers that are threatening local news coverage. Hedge funds are buying newspaper companies and gutting staff at papers including the Mercury News and the East Bay Times. Forum takes a look at the state of local journalism.
