You may have never heard of Palantir Technologies but odds are Palantir knows about you. The company, founded in 2004 by Peter Thiel and others, uses algorithms to collect and connect data on people from corporate execs to gang members. Used by major corporations to make sure employees don’t leak information and by police departments to keep tabs on “pre-crime” suspects, the technology raises not only legal questions but moral and ethical ones, too.
