Monsters represent not merely fear, but fear of the weird outcast who's nevertheless strong. People not only fear the weird outcast but fear *becoming* that outcast. But there are times when, by standing up for principle, you become that outcast...and that's OK. The Creature from the Black Lagoon is the true hero. He was minding his own business and then normal human society intruded on him. By dressing up on Halloween, children take control over what society usually fears; it shows kids that they need not fear the weird outcast, nor should they ultimately fear being seen as the weird outcast.
