We focus on the sad fact of modern warfare: civilian populations — innocent men, women and children — are the prime victims. This results in some cases from intentional strategy, or because technological weaponry is used. (We’re seeing this graphically on display in the battle over Ukraine.)
In this segment we hear the great historian Howard Zinn on the warped “moral calculation” that militaries use in deciding that the life of the soldier is of higher value than the life of the innocent civilians impacted. We also listen to historian Sven Lindqvist, recorded at his home in Stockholm, reflecting on the history of aerial bombardment — a peculiar development of the 20th century that is very much still in evidence today.
