Description: "All they want to see is demented madmen running around in ski masks hacking up young virgins" - Peter Vincent, 'Fright Night' Scream Queen, Final Girl, Femme Fatale...the portrayal of women in the horror genre is the subject of this week's discussion. For the majority of horror film's long history it can be reasonably argued that female characters have been sidelined to damsels in distress, a tool of the scriptwriter to further the evil of the antagonist or deliver the heroics of the male protagonist. There was an upheaval to these established constructs in the 1970's but things fell into the equally dismissive 'final girl' roles of the slasher subgenre. How far have we come, how does the scale balance today and where might gender roles shift in the years to come? All these questions and much more are debated with a special guest host in studio - Liz Strange, author of the Dark Kiss trilogy and devoted lifelong fan of the horror genre, who helps provide observations from a female perspective. We are proud to say this discussion ended up becoming one of our more involving and considered conversations and we invite everyone to weigh in on the subject with their thoughts. Following our extended segment discussing the gender roles of horror, we top things off with a couple of quick lists to recognize some of our personal favorite horror movie heroines and final girls. The single film covered in detail is the 2010 remake of I Spit on Your Grave (to close up the rape/revenge exploitation talk). Can they possibly come close to recreating the nightmare of the '78 original? Should they try? Tune in to find out.
