Historic Performance Podcast #9 - Will Abbott

Category: Sports & Recreation
Duration:
Publish Date: 2015-11-17 01:30:35
Description:

In the ninth episode of the Historic Performance Podcast, I interview Will Abbott. He is quite a busy fellow, who is not only the U-21 Strength & Conditioning Coach for Brighton & Hove Albion FC, but he is also getting his PhD in Exercise Science on a part-time basis at the University of Brighton.  For his dissertation, Will is researching GPS & Accelerometery data in Elite Football.

Outside of his work and research, Will has been busy giving seminar talks.  Just a month ago, Will talked at the Physios in Sport Conference about his PhD research regarding monitoring training load in elite football to better individualize training parameters and reduce the risk of injury.  In April 2016, he is slated to talk at the Football Medicine Conference in London.

Within this episode, Will talks about a variety of topics including how his opinion on fitness testing has changed as his career has progressed, a "typical" U-21 week at Brighton & Hove Albion, his PhD research, and the idea of a recovery checklist.

Here is a brief outline of what we covered in the show -

  • Will Abbott's Background
  • Overview of the departments & set-up at Brighton & Hove Albion
  • His thoughts on fitness testing & the tests used at the club
  • Yearly Periodization at Brighton & Hove Albion
  • A "typical" U-21 week at the club & the different themes for each specific day
  • How the fitness testing results are used to help create a conditioning & strength training program
  • Tracking fatigue during the season
  • His PhD research
  • Thoughts on cold water immersion + different recovery techniques
  • Idea of creating a recovery checklist to give the player a choice in terms of recovery modalities
  • Recommendations for S&C coaches starting their career
