In the 24th episode of the Historic Performance Podcast, I interview Michael Aufrichtig. Michael is the Head Men and Women's Fencing Coach at Columbia University and the New York Athletic Club Fencing Chairman. Michael joined Columbia in June 2011 at a time when their fencing program was struggling. By using his "MoneyBlade" data-driven approach to recruitment, he was able to turn the program around and helped them win the 2015 NCAA Fencing National Championship. There first one since 1993. Since then, Michael has been featured in numerous newspaper articles and gave a TedX talk titled One Touch to Glory due to his unique approach to finding talented fencers that will excel in collegiate fencing. In college fencing, matches are 5 points instead of the standard 15 points. In this episode, Michael Aufrichtig talks about his love for fencing, how he came up with his "MoneyBlade" approach to recruitment, and the importance of strength & conditioning for fencers.
