In the 84rd episode of the Historic Performance Podcast, I interview Pat Byrne. Pat is a global consultant in the area of fatigue management and sleep science. Pat pioneered the use of sleep and fatigue technology and systems in professional sports in 2008 as a consultant to the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League. He innovated systems used by the US Air Force for mission planning and sleep research to provide the first successful “Fatigue Management” program in sports. During this time, he expanded the program to include teams and athletes from the NBA, MLB, MLS, NFL, NCAA and AFL as well as rugby, golf and National and Olympic teams. Currently, Pat is semi-retired and consults with select teams and athletes. His book, “Inconvenient Sleep”, on why teams win and lose, is expected to be out this spring. In this episode, Pat talks about the validity of consumer grade sleep wearables, the three primary areas that may impact an athlete's sleep, and the legalities of collecting sleep data with professional athletes.
