The Druze

Category: Religion & Spirituality
Duration: 00:26:29
Publish Date: 2021-08-13 04:00:00
Description: The Druze are a religious minority in the middle east, living mainly between Syria, Lebanon, and Israel. The religious movement was founded in the 11th Century by Hamza ibn Ali ibn Ahmad, an Ismaili leader, mixing aspect of Shia Islam and Esoterism, among other western philosophies. The Druze culture forms an inherent part of the heritage in the countries where they live, but they were also part of religious conflicts. Because they are an insular community – conversions are forbidden either out of, or into, the faith, the Druze face a number of existential challenges, in a region were unrest is the norm. Tamara Rasamny meets young Druze men and women. She hears what pressures young people in the community face, such as marrying inside or out of the faith and how they reconcile loyalty to their faith and their country. She also hears the beliefs that are at the heart of the Druze faith and how young people deal with living without practising any religion, in a highly religious and sectarian society.
