Artifacts are out and process is in. It’s no longer enough for designers graduating into today’s fast-paced, interdisciplinary business environments to point to a portfolio piece and say, “I did that.” The work no longer speaks for itself.
So how do design students learn to articulate their process, to show hiring managers not only what they’ve done but how they’ve done it? That’s one of the challenges being taken up by The Savannah College of Art & Design.
By emphasizing their process-driven results, SCAD, known for being on the leading edge of design education, trains students to share not only what they’ve done but, more important, how they think.
In this conversation with Ilise Benun, founder of Marketing-Mentor.com and Partner for HOW Design Live’s new Creative Entrepreneur program, Jason Fox, SCAD’s Chair of the Graphic Design Department, and Jane Zash, Professor of Graphic Design, describe how SCAD develops students who are entrepreneurial in their thinking, prepared for today’s constantly changing and collaborative environment and valuable on Day 1. |
