The boys talk about the benefits of training the mental aspects of Jiu Jitsu in this weeks episode.
Paulie found an article deep in the archives at bjjee.com about the science behind learning according to science. It correlated with a couple of books he read, The Talent Code and Brain Rules.
Paulie gets just a touch into the weeds as how we make new connections and how we reinforce them through proper repetition.
Bonus on the mental drilling side, studies have shown that visualization works better than actual physical practice so long as you are doing perfect visualization.
Another idea behind the brain training is the fact that practicing Jiu Jitsu is so good for your brain. As we get older our mental abilities start to diminish more and more the older we get. By doing a sport like Jiu Jitsu, we get both mental training and physical training all wrapped up in one sport.
This means that we have a better chance of staving off mental illness such as Alzheimer’s and dementia. If those kinds of things run in your family, it’s probably a good idea to do this sport for the long run.
We talk about others ways to train your brain while training Jiu Jitsu. For example, train on your dumb side as well as or instead of your smart side. This’ll keep things fun and interesting if you feel like it’s getting stagnant. |
