Description: On this edition of Called to Coach, Dean discusses the Johari window. The Johari window is a technique used to help people better understand their relationship with themselves and others. The intent of the technique is to provide more self-awareness and to help people see their blind spots. Part of strengths coaching is exactly that, expanding people’s self-awareness to achieve breakthrough growth. The Johari window is also a great model to use on yourself as a strengths coach -- to think through your own development and blind spots. We talk about “basements” when we analyze strengths, but blind spots and basements are not the same thing. Blind spots are the areas that individuals can’t see. Basements are something people are usually aware of, but may not manage well. The Johari window guides people in thinking through feedback from others and pointing out the blind spots that others see, but that individuals may not know about themselves.
