Description: Women are underrepresented at almost all levels of elected office. In the Illinois General Assembly, only 36 percent of lawmakers (64 of 177) are women. In Congress just under 1 in 4 members are women. The shortage is even more pronounced in the Republican Party. Following the 2018 election, the number of GOP women in office fell in Congress (from 29 to 20) and statehouses across the country (from 705 to 660).
