Romans 7:14
For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. (ESV)
In this sermon Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones preaches on the much-debated passage of Romans 7:14. He seeks to answer the question: who is the man that Paul speaks of? Some say he is an unregenerate man. Others say that he is a truly saved Christian. And others say that he is a saved, but spiritually immature, Christian. What is one to believe? Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones urges us all to come to the text with an open mind and not simply translating it through the lens of one’s own tradition. He says that central to understanding this passage is to understand that the apostle Paul is still talking about the Law and how it functions in the Christian life. For we must understand that Christ came to fulfill the Law. Furthermore, we must understand what it means to be carnal and in the flesh. This is the state of sin and enmity with God that all unbelievers are in. By weighing all these things to together, one can begin to make sense of what this passage means and how it impacts our life. This sermon serves as a faithful exposition to this difficult and much debated passage. |
