Today s guest started his career as an investment banker but quickly realized it wasn’t for him and instead has built a great career for himself with portfolio companies of private equity funds. Doug Brackman is currently the Treasurer and Manager of Financial Planning & Analysis for Pexco, LLC, a manufacturer of specialty plastic products located in Atlanta, GA.
My conversation with Doug will give you a better feel for one type of internal corporate finance role. We talk a lot about Doug’s day-to-day role and responsibilities, but we also spend a lot of time on what it really takes to be successful and what employers are really looking for from their people.
In this episode we discuss:
- Some of the differences between internal corporate finance roles and investment banking
- Various paths you can take to a high-level corporate finance position
- Why it might make sense to follow an accounting career path out of college and transition to finance later
- What it is like working for a private equity-owned portfolio company
- A few ways that corporate finance professionals get involved with M&A transactions within an operating company
- The fun of being involved in the day-to-day decisions and responsibilities, including planning, forecasting, credit facilities, cash management, etc.
- Basics of covenant tests, coverage ratios and leverage multiples when dealing with a commercial bank loan
- What employers really value (above and beyond relevant classwork and generic success)
- Various philosophies on pursuing an MBA (or not)
