09/09/23 - Farming Today This Week: fruit and veg supply chains, agricultural science and hot weather impacts

Description: Following Government reviews into the dairy and pig sectors, there will now be a new inquiry into the fruit and veg supply chain later this autumn. It follows salad shortages on supermarket shelves and complaints from growers that the price they're paid doesn't always cover the cost of production. Agricultural research may be a little bit easier after the Government's announcement this week that the UK is to re-join the EU's flagship scientific research scheme, Horizon. We've been excluded from the scheme for the last 3 years because of disagreements with the EU over the Northern Ireland protocol. For the agricultural research institute, Rothamsted Research, that's meant a 20% a drop in EU funding, so the latest news brings fresh hope. And how do you keep a pig cool in this hot weather? The answer is - give it a bath. Presented by Charlotte Smith Producer for BBC Audio in Bristol by Heather Simons
