25/11/19: Producing energy on farm, The farm counting its carbon, Scottish milk

Category: Science & Medicine
Duration: 00:11:37
Publish Date: 2019-11-25 00:02:00
Description: To begin farm energy week Charlotte Smith speaks to Peter Tyldesley from the Centre for Alternative Technology in Powys about the ways farmers can produce energy to use on-farm and also to sell back to the National Grid. He also explains that with battery storage increasing and new schemes to link-up farmers producing energy with housing projects mean that farming could play a crucial role in the future. Whilst many farmers are increasingly concerned about their carbon footprint on this week's On Your Farm, available on BBC Sounds, Caz Graham has been to meet one farmer who has gone one step further. Will Case produces beef, lamb, free-range eggs and milk on the family farm on the edge of Morecambe Bay in Cumbria and he invited Mike Berners-Lee, an expert in carbon footprinting onto the farm to take a look. Dairy analyst Chris Walkland tells Anna Hill why Scottish dairy farmers are expanding their herds and that opportunities to export milk abroad may be the future for the Scottish dairy industry.
