[11] How to spot an ethical business

Description:

Do you really trust the 'sustainable', 'green', 'cruelty-free' and 'ethical' claims on a label?

Is the business you're buying from really living up to the values and standards they claim?

Greenwashing is on the rise, with many businesses claiming to be more ethical than they really are. Big brands are moving away from accredited schemes like Fairtrade in favour of their own internal standards, but with no independent regulations how can we be sure that they are living up to their ethical claims?

Studies have shown that consumer trust in brands is declining, and more people are trying to live ethically, but doing the research into every brand you buy from can be time consuming.

Social Enterprise Mark is an independent accreditation for social enterprises that are truly living up to their claims and having a positive social and/or environmental impact. Sophie from Social Enterprise Mark joins us on the #EthicalHour podcast to discuss how to spot an ethical business, how the social enterprise model works and why we need to look for independent accreditations.

They are also running the #GoBeyondTheBadge campaign encouraging consumers to learn more about the claims businesses are making and helping us know what to look for when purchasing ethical products.
