Many people believe that Orthodox Judaism is all about becoming more and more religious, and taking on all of the 613 commandments as soon as you can, but that's not the truth. The true and proper way is to check yourself, to understand who you are, to understand what makes you unique, and to build your judaism and relationship with God on those character traits that you discover about yourself. Of course all of the mitzvot (plural of mitzvah) are important, but the absolute first step in your spiritual journey needs to be to bring Hashem (God), to bring the Creator into your life, where you are right now, in the present. Driving in your fancy car, God is with you. Drinking alcohol at the party - God loves you. Start to pray for the physical things you want and need in your life. Don't think that God only wants lofty prayers of holiness and righteousness and purity - God wants the truth. And if your truth is that right now you need a vacation on the beach, that's what you should pray about. God loves the truth. So start saying the truth, and start working towards being a better more connected and spiritual person, one grounded step at a time.
