In this inspiring class in Havurat Yisrael in Manhattan, Rav Dror Moshe Cassouto talks about just how important the intentions of the heart are in Judaism. Judaism started as a relationship between God and and the Children of Israel, and it still is. It is much more than just another religion with it's own unique set of rules and laws. Jewish law is not the goal, it is the way to connect to God, because that is the goal, that is our mission in life. A connection and relationship to God is a lifelong journey filled with ups, downs, victories, and failures. Hashem (God) is always testing us, to see how connected we are to him. To see how much we are counting on Him. To see how much Emunah (Faith) we have in him, in his kindness and mercy and love. And the gauge for how connected we are and how strong our relationship is, is not by how many mitzvot we do and how many commandments we keep. It is gauged by how much we pray, and how much we turn to God in every situation. We don't need to be perfect, we just need to pray in the situations where we aren't perfect. God doesn't want you to be religious. He doesn't want you to be another good orthodox jew. He wants you to love him. He wants you to trust him. He wants your heart. And the way to give him your heart is to pray, and do hitbodedut, and jewish meditation, and just having a deep personal conversation with God, like you would with your best friend. It's good to keep the mitzvot and commandments, but don't forget to build a relationship with God also.
