The secret isn't kabbalah, it's not some deep kabbalistic bible code or chanting a combination of letters of one of God's names. It is very simple. The way to have a real relationship with God and be close to him, is to be a man of truth. Truth. To stop lying about how we are, and who we are, and imagining to ourselves and trying to convince God and everyone around us that we're holy and have holy desires. To stop pretending to be all spiritually pure, and to stand in from of God and admit and confess that we have spiritual deficiencies. Confession - simply Standing in a quiet place, understanding that you are in front of God, and repenting and confessing all the things you are doing wrong. God doesn't care that we are sinning - he is patient and understanding and willing to forgive us and work with us. What God doesn't like about our sins, is when we pretend like they aren't there. When we brush them under the table and run away from our sins and pretend like we are indeed righteous. That Hashem (God) can't tolerate. God's signature is the seal of truth. And no matter how low and embarrassing your truth is, if it is the truth, it will be accepted and bring you close to God. Repent, confess, and pray for God to help you. That is all Hashem is waiting for before giving us that feeling of connection to Him. He is waiting for our honest hearts. That is the meaning of real teshuva. Not simply taking on more mitzvot and being a "better Jew". Doing Teshuva, means returning to Hashem, and the only way to return to God and be close to Him, is to start saying the truth.
