Author: Dr. Michael Hunt, MD Educational Pearls: - Retrospective study over 31,000 emergency department patient visits from 2011 to 2016 with alcohol intoxication at Hennepin County Medical Center
- 1% of patients presenting to ED with alcohol intoxication were admitted to the ICU or used critical care resources when not initially anticipated
- Most common critical illnesses were acute hypoxic respiratory failure , alcohol withdrawal, sepsis, and intracranial hemorrhage
- Those admitted to the ICU had higher incidences of hypoglycemia, hypotension, tachycardia, fever, hypoxia, hypothermia, and the use of parenteral sedatives while in the ED
