Summary:

We are creatures of habit. From the moment we wake up in the morning to the moment we go to sleep at night, we perform multiple tiny habits throughout our entire day. From the morning routine that we have, to the way we perform our hygiene routine, to the way that we speak to people, and even to the thoughts that we have, our habits can either push us to become better people, or pull us to become worse. That's why it's so important to choose our habits wisely. In this week's Thursday Thoughts, I lay out 5 habits that you need to stop doing immediately, and why they're so detrimental. I hope you enjoy.

1. Stop Comparing Yourself To Others - Comparing yourself to others is a very tricky thing. On one hand, it can be used to motivate you to work harder to get to a goal that you've set. Unfortunately, on the other hand, it can make you feel unskilled or insignificant. When you compare yourself to others, whether valuing yourself as better or worse than them, you are opening the door for unhealthy emotions such as pride or insecurity. We are all unique people, and when we compare our skill sets, intelligence, or emotions to others, it is a recipe for disaster.

2. Stop Spending Time With Naysayers - The people who you surround yourself are so important. They are the ones that decide who you become whether you like it or not. If you are surrounded by people who consistently belittle or insult you or your goals, you will be more likely to stay stagnant and resist growth. If someone doesn't believe in you and is constantly letting you know, that's a cue to remove that person from your life. Albert Einstein once said, "Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it's stupid." Someone else may not see your vision and may think you are a lesser human being from their perspective, but that means nothing when it comes to reality.

3. Stop Complaining - When you complain, you are giving attention to the things in your life that are bad. This causes a spike in cortisol, and your physical and mental health then takes a toll. Learning to stop complaining is such an important thing to do, because our complaints shape our reality. Constantly complaining and focusing on the bad is taking your attention away from all the good, positive things in your life that are pushing you to become better.

4. Stop Using Your Phone Right When You Wake Up - Giving other people your full attention from the moment you wake up until the moment you go to bed is extremely unhealthy for your mental health. When you wake up and check your phone first thing, you are making other people a priority. This doesn't allow you to focus on yourself, and can cause a wide range of mental health issues. Taking anywhere from ten minutes to an hour or two without your phone in the morning and at night is so important for health and happiness.

5. Stop Hitting Snooze - The snooze button is the definition of average. When you hit snooze, you are telling yourself that it's okay to put off your obligations and that you're not excited for your day. Not only that, but it can leave you in a state of sleep inertia, where you are more tired for an extra three hours after you get up. Learning to avoid the snooze button is such a crucial habit to get ahead in today's society, and if you're looking for guidance on where to start (because it's extremely hard to learn), check out our 'No-Snooze Setup' for the framework that I used to go from hitting snooze 5 - 6 times every morning to completely removing it from my daily routine.
