Free Skype #183 Ashley What do you with a dog that is afraid of children. How do you stop a dog that barks, growls and charges people. Most likely this dog is resource guarding the owner. To stop this kind of behavior you have to punish it. Remote collar training is the best tool to do this with. Maintaining a strong daily structure in the house and a strict routine is also very important. Also it is imperative to eliminate free roaming and crate train the dog. Ashley asks... My boyfriend and I adopted Captain from a shelter in town when he was a year old. When we adopted him, the shelter told us he was a German Sheppard, but upon taking him home and seeing his behaviors on top of his distinct traits we found out he is in fact a Belgium Malinios. When Captain came to us, he bit at your hands and feet and was pretty relentless with this. He would bark at you until you played with him and just VERY bossy. This scared alot of people. Since then I have been working with him and he no longer bites at your hands and feet, he is a lot calmer, and certainly more obedient. Captain has grown very attached to me specifically, so much so that we always joke that he is "my dog", although he is both of ours. He is very protective over me, but also very friendly and loves people. I have never been concerned about others safety around my dog. However, there have been a few times where he has growled and even charged a young child for being near him. Also If I am holding a baby he gets very very nervous. My boyfriend and I of course have no children yet, but do plan to in the future. I want to really make sure Captain knows his boundaries, and that I can trust him around my children and others children. I cannot really pinpoint if he is afraid of them or what it is that makes him be on edge. He has NEVER aggressively bitten anyone, nor a child. He however, has definitely warned them. I really want to correct this behavior. He is our first high drive dog, and Ive done my very best in training him myself, but I by no means know everything. Every day in 2017 starting the first week of January I am offering a free 15 minute Skype session with folks from around the world.
