Desert Ace Hardware celebrates 50 years in Twentynine Palms all weekend

Desert Ace Hardware in Twentynine Palms is celebrating 50 years this weekend. The store originally opened as an auto store in 1953. In 1976, the owners expanded the space and joined the Ace Hardware cooperative. 50 years later, they are celebrating that change with a sale, giveaways, dogs, hot dogs, and more. 

Jef Harmatz spoke with owner Janet Kodish about the store’s history.

“It’s the anniversary of 50 years as an Ace Hardware store in Twentynine Palms. We started the hardware store in 1976 as an expansion to the original business. In 1976, my folks joined the Ace Retailers Cooperative. Ace is the largest independently owned hardware store cooperative in the nation with over 5,500 independently owned stores. 

“We’re going to do so much to celebrate. The celebration is going to be all weekend long from Friday to Sunday.

And so we’re going to have sales. We’re going to have discounts. And then the big day is Saturday (April 11) when we’re having a party, free hot dogs, sodas, and chips. Cody Joseph is going to be here from Z107.7. We also have a grand prize that people can enter to win for free. That’s a Blackstone grill that we are going to raffle off for free.”

I asked her about the store’s relationship to the larger Twentynine Palms community.

“We’ve been serving the community for over 70 years. The store has really grown with the community. When I was a kid, the community was, like, 6,500 people. And now it’s, like, over 20,000. 

“It’s not just a store. We’re friends with our customers. Our customers are friends with us. And it feels so good to know that we’re serving this community, which is so interesting and so diverse and is so close to my heart. We’re really a community-based store in a way that I hope makes the community better. We want to make the community better for being there.”

The celebration is on Saturday, April 11, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The public is invited to stop by Desert Ace Hardware, located 5152 Adobe Road for a festive afternoon of free hot dogs, giveaways, exclusive in-store sales, Benjamin Moore paint demos, a live DJ from Z107.7fm, and a pet adoption event hosted by Palms-n-Paws. Attendees can also enter to win a Blackstone griddle in a free raffle drawing.
