Long-time locals, newer residents, veterans, tourists and at least one rock star made up the sizable crowd at the “No Kings” rally in downtown Joshua Tree on a windy Saturday.
Nationwide, there were over 3,300 scheduled events in every state and congressional district as well as some rallies abroad that registered opposition to the Trump administration and its policies.
The peaceful demonstration consisted of approximately 300 people gathered at all four corners of Park Boulevard and Highway 62. Amongst the crowd one could find attendees in costumes, music blaring, protest chanting, flags waving, dogs, children and even real kids (as in… baby goats).
Of course, there were signs. Lots and lots of signs, everything touting the rejection of a monarchy, warnings of encroaching authoritarianism, anti-war slogans, statements of peace and/or love, and others inferring sheer rage. Passing cars and trucks often honked their support.
Event organizer Cherry was pleased with the turnout, saying “I think it’s good. I think we have about just about as many that came last time. I call that a win.”
Rock legend John Doe was headlining Saturday night at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center and also participated. “My sign says, ‘Defend The Constitution’ and the crossing guard over here says, ‘Did you ever think you’d have to worry about defending the Constitution?’ I thought for a minute, ‘No, I didn’t really.’ And it might just be a convenient phrase that sounds heavy duty but I do believe there are Constitutional rights that are challenged and they’re working on it.”
Local podcaster and Twentynine Palms resident Chris Clarke (90 Miles From Needles) offered his take. “The bright spot is that this is the golden age of protest in America. Americans really don’t want this except for a few people that have been sadly persuaded or deluded or whatever word you want to use. This is America at its best, right here.”
Local resident Mitch Miller felt it was important to show up. “I’m here because I believe in an America in which public lands, health and education are of utmost importance. I’m not seeing that right now. I’m seeing too much privatization and democracy dying. I think it’s time to resist and fight back.”
Crystal Meyers, dressed as a Town Crier, complete with a giant hand bell, shared her message. “I’m the Town Crier! We’re in peril! Gotta do something, folks! Do it now!”
