Coinciding with Modernism Week down the hill in Palm Springs, Twentynine Palms Desert General will host a live conversation with Robert Landau, the photographer behind the new book Art Deco Los Angeles this Saturday (February 14).
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Landau will share how his quest to capture the city’s most distinctive architectural features evolved into a years-long pursuit of its rare and often overlooked Art Deco gems. Through striking visuals and engaging commentary, he reveals how the project grew organically from his broader mission to preserve the character, creativity, and layered cultural history of a city that resists easy definition. I asked Landau what makes L.A.’s relationship with Art Deco unique to the city.
“Art Deco is a style that really sort of began in the 1920s and through the 30s and 40s, there were a couple different phases… In L.A. which is normally so connected to what’s going on right up to the moment because of the entertainment industry, people are sort of unaware that we have these great historic art architectural treasures you know hidden in plain sight in the city. I think L.A. can rival almost any other city in America in terms of the quantity and quality of Art Deco architecture.”
I asked Landau what would be one of his favorite pieces captured in the book.
“There’s a building on Broadway downtown called the eastern Columbia building and it’s just a bright turquoise blue terracotta building but the proportions, the color, the size — everything about it is just so elegant and I think you art deco has come to be equated with elegance, and even though it’s now 100 years old, it still feels very fresh and modern when you see it.”
Desert General’s two-hour conversation with photographer Robert Landau goes from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., followed by book signing, all free and open to the public. Art Deco Los Angeles will be available for purchase at Desert General, located at 6427 Mesquite Road in Twentynine Palms next to Kitchen in the Desert.
