The Landers road maintenance special district was discussed as San Bernardino County Public Works is warning that if property taxes governing road maintenance and grading are not increased, the Landers special road district may have to be dissolved. The road district is responsible for maintenance or grading roads in Landers and would have to be halted.
When the special district was first formed 41 years ago, the sum of $20.00 per year in property taxes covered grading and maintenance of dirt roads in the area. That amount has never been raised and subsequently the quality of Landers’ dirt roads has deteriorated markedly. It is being proposed to raise the amount per year to $75.00 which would cover road inspections and grading every three months, plus emergency grading after a storm. On Wednesday December 10th there will be a town hall meeting at the Joshua Tree Community Center, 6171 Sunburst Avenue in Joshua Tree at 5:30 p.m., to discuss raising property taxes for road maintenance. Landers residents are being encouraged to car pool and attend the meeting on Wednesday.
Ralph Megna, lifelong astronomer, showed how to find the constellation Pegasus almost directly overhead around 8:00 p.m. In ancient mythology Pegasus is a horse ridden by Andromeda. The Andromeda galaxy is 15 trillion miles, or 2.5 million light years away. A lot closer to home, on the night of December 13 – 14 2025, looking East, the Geminid Meteor shower will be at its height for viewing ease from Earth. No need for binoculars or a telescope as these are clearly visible with the naked eye.
There will be a free holiday event on Saturday December 20th from noon to 3:00p.m. at Belfield Hall, 58380 Reche Road in Landers. Santa will be there too!
