Description:

Joshua Tree Retreat Center will be the new home to the former vendors of the Sky Village Swap Meet since their former grounds at Yucca Valley High School’s parking lot became suddenly unavailable last month.

After the popular open air community swap meet at Yucca Valley’s Sky Village had to shutter its grounds due to ADA issues in December 2024, the vendors had since worked a deal with Yucca Valley High School to continue their open-air market in their parking lot on weekends. But last month, vendor representatives received an email from MUSD, stating that the parking lot would no longer be available due to “significant demands on the MUSD custodial team and frequent conflicts with programs such as Saturday school and weekend campus operations,” worrying many vendors who rely on the swap meet as a significant source of income. A petition for MUSD to reconsider was circulated with hundreds of signatures, but vendor Zena Carr said it was time to look elsewhere.

“We quickly realized that no matter the number of signatures we’re going to get or whatever community support we have, the high school was no longer going to let us there no matter what. So, we had to act fast. I reached out to a couple connections that I had, which led to Seth of Cliffhanger Guides, and he connected me with the people at the Retreat Center and it just kind of went from there.”

Now officially renamed “The Joshua Tree Swap Meet,” Carr says she feels like it will have a bigger following at the Retreat Center given it’s established community event space, and after the amount of support they’ve received after losing their grounds twice.

“The community has really come together for us and helped get some live music for our grand opening, a face painter… so it’s really all about community at this point. Everybody has reached out and helped out in as many ways as they possibly can.”

Musician/booker Palo Xanto has helped book the acts for Saturday’s grand opening, including The Prickly Pears, Flying Mountains, Austin Vallejo, and Bonus Oceans for the live music that will run from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Carr says the swap meet vendors have a 6-month agreement with the Retreat Center to hold the market on Saturday’s only in the west end parking lot in front of the Sanctuary. She added Terri Castillo and Cheryl Bookout of the Retreat Center’s Board of Directors have been great to work with so far.

“They’ve been fantastic. I really have no complaints. They’ve wanted us there and appreciated us and so it’s really been a good ride so far, and I’m sure Saturday will be a great start.”

The Joshua Tree Swap meet starts this Saturday, November 29 at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center’s west end parking lot, 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Vendor set up from 5:00-7:00 a.m.
