Celebrating its fourth year of diverse arts and culture in the Morongo Basin, the Mas Festival kicks off its three-week series of programming this Saturday (October 25) at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center.
Given the “mas” in the festival’s name, one might assume Mas Festival’s focus would be only on Latin culture. But its meaning of “more” is the real vision—celebrating further arrays of diverse cultures for a longer period of time rather than just one holiday other culture’s heritages are confined to.
“It used to be Hay Festival and we’ve changed it to Mas Festival. We were first producing just basically events that had to do with Latin culture and now we’re really expanding to doing Latin culture continuing but also into other cultures as well,” said Jose.
Mas Festival began at a time where communities around the globe felt especially fragmented, so Licia and Jose wanted to act locally and offer a way for folks to gather safely outside.
“We started during the pandemic towards the end of it, just as a group of people wanting to offer the high desert some cultural events happening outside, then we eventually went inside and partnered with the Joshua Tree Retreat center and also the Joshua Tree Voice so this is our fourth year,” said Licia
The Mas Festival is primarily sponsored by Licia and Jose’s non-profit dance theater company The Latino Dance Project, for which this series of events will conclude in a fundraiser on November 12.
The four events spanning this fall segment of Mas Festival will be happening at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center and Art Trap, featuring Native American and New Zealand folk and Flamenco fusion music , an indie Lantinx film series, and this Saturday Mas Fest kicks off at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary at Joshua Tree Retreat Center, featuring Versa Style Street Dance Company presenting a dynamic hip hop dance show with messages of diversity, inclusion, and equity.
